The History and Properties of Rare British Fluorite Crystal from the UK

British fluorite crystal has been mined in the British Isles since the Roman times and has been highly regarded for its unique beauty and quality. The Romans mined fluorite from several different areas of Britain including; Durham and Derbyshire. British fluorite mineral is highly collectable due to being so rare and is prized for its stunning structure. In fact, British fluorite is considered to be some of the best fluorite that can be found worldwide.

Types of Fluorite Crystal Found in the UK

British Cubic Fluorite

Fluorite mineral contains a combination of calcium and fluorine. British fluorite crystal is admired for its unique cubic structures and fluorescence, it is known to glow under UV light due to the presence of certain minerals in the crystal. British cubic fluorite is mined out of different mines in County Durham, a mineral-rich area located to the north of the UK.

Some of the most well-known UK fluorite pockets are located in the Lady Annabella Mine and Rogerley Mines which are both located in Weardale, County Durham, England. Fluorite from this area is often referred to as Weardale fluorite.

The Lady Annabella Mine has been mined for fluorite since the 1960’s. Mining work began again in this area in 2020. This particular type of fluorite is known for its vibrant green, purple, lilac or yellow-colored crystals. Within the Lady Annabella Mine, the Fairy Holes Pocket has yielded some of the most stunning fluorite specimens and is named after the Fairy Holes Caves, a nearby cavy system. What makes these mineral specimens even rarer is that this mine is now closed and it is uncertain when or if it will ever reopen.

The Rogerley Mine has been mined for its stunning green fluorite since the 1970’s. The 50 Year pocket was first discovered in 2022 and has yielded some beautiful emerald green colored specimens. Checkout our YouTube video on British Fluorite here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNnNxv9MHd0

Rare Fluorite Properties

British fluorite crystal has been highly regarded throughout history as a valuable commodity. It is believed to help improve mental clarity and decisiveness, helping to ward of negative energies. It’s also good for learning new skills, studying and processing information. Green fluorite is specifically associated with the heart chakra, helping to promote balance and harmony.

Blue John Fluorite

This type of fluorite can only be found in Castleton, Derbyshire, UK. This crystal is known for its vibrant purple, blue, and yellow hues. It’s found in limestone caverns which were formed by the melting of Ice Age glaciers, creating voids in the rock. The limestone caverns extend for 70 meters underground and Blue John Crystals appear in veins within the rock. Blue John was first mined by the Romans who were looking for lead and came across Blue John crystals.

This highly prized crystal was used to make valuable possessions such as vases, bowls, cups and decorative items. The area the Romans previously mined was rediscovered 300 years ago and Blue John crystal was found again. The name Blue John comes from the French word “Bleu Jaune” meaning Blue Yellow. As many pieces of this crystal were processed and worked in France, it’s thought that the French gave it this name and the name stuck when it came back into the UK.

Blue John is mined carefully with a hammer and chisel to prevent damage to the crystals. Effort is made to mine the crystal responsibly in the Castleton area.

According to legend, Blue John crystals are believed to share many properties with other types of fluorites and were traditionally thought to bring good luck. They are also said to help cleanse the chakras, promoting calmness and relaxation. Blue John Crystal can also be used for setting intentions or making resolutions.
